tree-icon Where We Work

AFFON operates across Nepal from east to west and north to south, covering the Inner Terai, Terai, Hills, and Himalayan regions, prioritizing family forest smallholder farmers; securing property rights, focusing on agroforestry, and policy advocacy. About 20,000 smallholder privately-owned forest farmers from 72 districts in all seven provinces have been federated into AFFON and are protecting more than 60,000 hectares of forests. The organization actively engages in policy advocacy and policy formation processes at various government levels, including the federal, provincial and local governments, on behalf of family forest owners. AFFON has expanded its committee and institutional structure in municipalities, districts, and private forest groups at the local level. Family forest farmers are general members at the local level and are typically composed of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and Local Communities (LCs) with around 30% of female who are dependent on Agriculture and forestry activities for their livelihoods. Among the total 20,000 households, closed to 30% are indigenous peoples (IPs). In addition to small-scale income, smallholder farmers are contributing to greenery, biodiversity conservation, water recharge, and many other ecosystem services.
